Big Wall and Aid

Aid climbing is a style of climbing completely unique. Using devices and equipment, a climber makes upward progress with a number of different methods, sometimes on the smallest of edges that no free climber would ever be able to go. Please see below for our selection of aid climbing equipment.

Aid climbing equipment consists of a wide variety of devices. Rock climbing pitons are probably the most associated with aid climbing and their use can not be underestimated, both in aid climbing and free climbing depending on the ethics of the area. A climbing piton will be made of either hard steel or soft steel and usually a mix of the two allows a greater range of placements.

Rock climbing heads, or aid climbing head sets are also extremely important for aid climbing. A aid head will be hammered into the rock to make for a aid placement where traditional passive protection will not suffice.

Fifi hooks and sky hooks allow the allow the aid climber to hang from mere flakes on the wall, and a sky hook and etrier make a perfect combination. A climbing etrier, or stepped climbing etriers, allow the aid climber to make use of placements made and make the fastest progress up a route. Additional to all these devices, is the trusty rock climbing hammer, to actually make use of the aid protection, a good lightweight hammer designed specifically for aid is invaluable.
